The George Price Memorial was dedicated in November 2018 to mark the centenary of the end of the First World War . It stands on the spot where the last Commonwealth soldier was killed in the conflict. Originally from Nova Scotia, on the Atlantic coast of eastern Canada, he was 26 years old and his name was George Lawrence Price.
Like so many other young men, he took part in the "Hundred Days of Canada", the final offensive that led to liberation and in which the Corps, under command of the First British Army, played a leading role.
While the armistice was signed at 5.15am on 11 November, George Price lost his life at Ville-sur-Haine at 10.58am , two minutes before the ceasefire was declared.
The work “Impact” is a creation of the Belgian sculptor Sylvain Patte. It is carved from the blue stone of Soignies and symbolizes the bloodshed, the sacrifice of George Price and the other freedom fighters, the tears of those who lost a loved one, but also the impact of the war on our civilization. The successive hedges around it symbolically recall the trench warfare , while Canadian trees accentuate the space and create an access route to the monument.
