The boat lifts on the Canal du Centre are four hydraulic installations built in Belgium between 1882 and 1917 to compensate for a height difference of 66 metres.
It was Napoleon I who in 1810 provided for the construction of a waterway between Mons and Charleroi, so that the Scheldt could be connected to the Meuse via the Haine and the Sambre. The various options for overcoming the difference in height were weighed against each other for decades, with the decision being made to build 4 hydraulic lifts.
This first lift could compensate for a difference in level of 15.40 metres . It was built from 1882 and tested. On 4 June 1888, the inauguration by King Leopold II followed. It took until 1917 before the entire route was completed, partly due to problems with the coal mines that lie beneath the route.
