This tubing-like hike along traffic-free paths explores the water-rich area south of the city of Ypres. We start at the Poterne Bridge (Leopold III Avenue, 8900 Ypres, Belgium).
This modern foot and bicycle bridge connects the inner to the outer fortifications between the Menin Gate and the Rijsel Gate. We walk through the Hoornwerk Park, a small green lung that was part of the outer fortifications.
Through the tunnel under the roundabout and the Zillebekevoetweg (to the right is the drinking water production center), we reach the Zillebekevijver. We walk around the 28-hectare pond. On the shore stands the whitewashed lodge. Afterwards, we take the unpaved path around the Drowned Meadow. This lower-lying area was once inhabited by craftsmen. In the early 1990s, it was decided to convert the area into a retention basin and reservoir for drinking water extraction. A selection of finds made by archaeologists here can be seen at the Ypres Museum.
Finally, we hike back to the pedestrian bridge over the outer fortifications.
