The domain Hoge Mouw is a provincial green lung in the heart of the Belgian ‘Kempen’ where coniferous trees, sand dunes, moors and heath fields dominate the views. It is a wonderful location for relaxing walks, mountainbike rides or horseback riding. The numerous trails are well marked.
The 104 hectare domain is located on the ‘Kempen hill ridge’ and is best known for his “Kabouterberg” (Gnome mountain) where kids can play between the air roots of conifers. The mysterious roots reach above the sand dunes causing a fairytale and even creepy atmosphere.
The walk starts at the parking along the Holle Weg, a side street of the Lichtaartsebaan and is marked with wooden stakes with red tops. The first half hour you can enjoy the tranquility and scents of the pine forest and then you reach the impressive construction zone of a new road + tunnel. You walk about 200 meters along the new road and tunnel and then again dive into the forest for a climb to the highest point of the Hoge Mouw. After the descent you will come across the legendary “Devil’s Pit” and you cross the Goorseweg to end up in a heath field.
The last part of the walk takes you through an old beech lane and then back to the parking lot.
