The Axenstrasse links the Swiss villages Brunnen and Flüelen along the shore of Lake Uri. The construction got its name because it is located along the "Axenberg" or Axen Mountain. The two-lane road is part of the Swiss national road network and carries the number A4. Large parts of the road goes through tunnels and rock fall galleries. It runs parallel to the route of the Gotthard railway, which belongs to the Swiss Federal Railways.
