Description by the author

The Valais Alpine Bike (route No. 43) starts in Verbier and ends in Sierre. The route is characterised by typical Valais mountain villages, perched high above the valley floor or in deep side valleys. Parts of the route coincide with the legendary "Grand Raid" bike race from Verbier to Grimentz. This bike marathon is not only the oldest and one of the most impressive bike races in the Alps, but also indisputably one of the most prestigious. Route No. 43 can be easily combined with the Valais Panorama Bike (route No. 88).
The Valais Alpine Bike route is shaped by typical Valais mountain villages, perched high above the valley floor or in deep side valleys. The first section is the same as the legendary "Grand-Raid" bike race from Verbier to Grimentz. This bike marathon is not only the oldest and one of the most impressive bike races in the Alps, but also indisputably one of the most prestigious. The route repeatedly travels far into the long side valleys. High above the Rhone Valley, you seem to travel along a huge vantage terrace with views into the main valley and over to impressive peaks. The stretch constantly offers broad views of Switzerland’s most famous 4,000-metre peaks, the silhouettes of the Grand Combin, Dent Blanche, Zinalrothorn, Weisshorn and Matterhorn tower into a steel-blue sky. On the other side of the Rohne Valley, you can make out the glaciers of Les Diablerets, the Wildhorn and the Wildstrubel. The route is edged with traditional sun-kissed Valais barns, with their typical stone slabs to protect against mice, almost a picture-postcard scene. Most of the quaint villages are well-kept and often offer culinary treats.
Visit the historic village centre of Grimentz and discover one of the most preserved villages of Valais. Admire the sunburnt chalets decorated with geranium.
You can reach Martigny with the Interregio trains between Geneva and Brig. From Martigny, take the regional train to Le Châble and then the bus or the cable car to Verbier.
Take the A9/E62 motorway to Martigny, then continue on the Grand St Bernard road before turning off towards Verbier at Sembrancher.
Follow the car-park routeing in Verbier
We recommend: bike in excellent working order, helmet, gloves and bell, clothing suitable for the weather (always carry a waterproof), food and drink.
Use marked bike trails and routes only, and observe all signposting. Please close gates after passing through. Please be considerate to walkers and to plants and animals. As a rule, walkers have priority. When planning, take into account participants’ fitness level and ability. All riding is at one’s own risk.
