Under the Town Hall of Bremen is the “Ratskeller”. Since 1405, German wines were stored and sold in this cellar. It’s the oldest wine cellar of Germany. And it even has the oldest wine barrel of Germany, a wine from Rüdesheim which is dated 1653.
The Town Hall of Bremen is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage. The façade features architectural elements based on masters of the Dutch Renaissance. It’s a wonder how this building survived so well the bombing of Bremen during World War II. The mean reason was that the people from the city were boarding up the outer walls of the town hall.
The Ratskeller had famous musicians as guest such as Johannes Brahms, Richard Strauss, Richard Wagner, ... but also famous statesmen such as Otto von Bismarck, Kaiser Wilhelm I and II,... and writers such as Nikolai Gogol.
