Tower erected in 1904 in honour of Otto Von Bismarck (1815-1898), the first chancellor and founder of the German Empire. From here you can see the Harz Mountains with the summit of Mount Brocken.
The Communists wanted to demolish the tower after World War II, but at the insistence of the inhabitants of Osterwieck it remained standing and was renamed Friedensturm, peace tower. It is a fine example of a whole series of towers and columns (240) that were built throughout the German Empire at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century. There are said to be about 170 of them in existence today.
