A castle with history: the castle was built in the 13th century and then expanded and walled in the 15th century. In 1543, Emperor Charles V succeeded in seizing the Julicher count's castle. The French subsequently organized it as a national property and sold it. However, the then owner could not maintain the building on his own and the castle fell into disrepair and unfortunately became a ruin. Many years later the castle was renovated and after the First World War a youth hostel was established in the west wing. In this way the Burcht remained lively and inviting. Every year 'Monschau Klassik' is organized in the courtyard, the orchestra and the artists then transform the castle into a true Mecca for opera lovers.
