The octagonal Chapel of St. John of Nepomuk in Nordkirchen was built in 1722 by the architects Gottfried Laurenz Pictorius and Peter Pictorius the Younger. It was commissioned by Ferdinand von Plettenberg, whose coat of arms can be found above the door, a minister of the Prince-Bishop of Münster.
In the 19th century, the chapel served as the burial place of Count Maximilian Friedrich von Plettenberg, the last descendant of the builders of Nordkirchen Castle and the chapel. After the First World War, the chapel was used as a war memorial and provided with appropriate plaques. In 1922, the chapel became the property of the municipality.
