Elten Abbey in Elten was founded around 967 and existed until 1803/1811. It was a high-aristocratic ladies' monastery directly under the empire.
At the end of the 9th and beginning of the 10th century, there was a castle of the counts in Hamaland on the Eltenberg, which rises 60 m above the Rhine plain. According to excavations in the 1960s, it is believed that the castle was built after the Norman incursions.
