Damme Windmill

Windmills belong to the Lower Rhine landscape. As landmarks and cultural memorials, they are a reminder of a bygone era of great craft traditions. In the Schermbeck municipal area there are mainly water mills. The numerous streams drove the millstones. Here in Damm, however, wind power served as an energy source early on.
Mayor Maassen applied for the construction of the mill as early as 1862. He justified the location with the long distance to the Gietlingsmühle in Bricht and the Schermbeck water mills in the middle of the town centre. It was created in the 1860s. Visible from afar over the Damme meadows, it sits majestically on an artificial hill high above the Auf dem Rahm farmstead. Today it looks as if it had only ceased operations yesterday. Well preserved and lovingly maintained. However, the last grain was ground here as early as 1940, when the mill was significantly destroyed in the Second World War. During the restoration in 1983, it received a new wing cross, but no new grinder.
