Description by the author

Historical wayside crosses from a time when the population of Britten lived almost exclusively from "stones" can be found along the way. Two abandoned quarries also bear witness to the work of stone carvers. In the romantic Saarhölzbach valley, all you can hear is the babbling of the stream. Historical boundary stones are reminders of the former border between the Saar region and Germany.

Cultural history and landscape become one on this trail.Between 1743 and 1786, stonemasons from Britten created numerous wayside crosses. Ten historic crosses line the stonemasons' path. In the shady forest, narrow forest paths are interwoven with wider forest tracks. The valley of the Saarhölzbach stream is reached on soft forest ground, steadily and gently downhill.Historical boundary stones of the former border can be found along the way. After the First World War, the "Saar region" was separated from Germany and placed under the administration of the League of Nations. On the ascent from the idyllic Saarhölzbach valley, there is a resting forest, which is crossed on a wide path.

In the sunshine, rays of sunlight illuminate the dark red rocks in a disused quarry, creating a fascinating play of shadows cast by the trees above the quarry. Flowers and grass grow out of cracks and crevices, some rock slabs are covered in thick layers of moss, trees grow on some rocks, their roots wrapped around the stone. At the "Fonkenbruch" quarry, the traces of hammer and chisel are still clearly visible on the dark rock faces of the narrow passage. Trees shroud the quarry in mystical darkness. A little later, wonderful views "Am Schönertskopf" over the forests as far as Losheim and Merzig.

The Steinhauerweg has been awarded 87 experience points by the German Hiking Institute.
