Varied tour that combines the former fortified town of Saarlouis with green oases
The recommended start of the tour is the "Großer Markt" in Saarlouis. Here, on the parade ground of the former baroque fortress city of the "Sun King" Louis XIV, you get a first impression of its exciting history. After passing the "Französische Straße" with its numerous stores and the "Kleiner Markt", you soon leave the city flair of the town center behind you and head in the same direction of the "Saarlouiser Runde" towards rural Lisdorf with its extensive fields of the "Lisdorfer Aue".
After a short ride through the town, we enjoy the hustle and bustle along and on the Saar on a short section to the Lisdorf lock and finally, after a small, gentle climb along the forest and field passages of the "Holzmühle" district, we reach the idyllic local recreation area around the "Taffingsweiher" in the Picard district, which can also be circumnavigated. Here you can also reconnect with the "Saarlouiser Runde" route. After a while, the wonderful landscape of the Taffing Valley takes you to the extensive fields of the village of Beaumarais, from where you have an impressive view of the Teufelsburg and the extensive meadows. The well-known premium hiking trail "Vauban-Steig" also runs here, named after the famous master builder of the fortified town of Saarlouis, Sébastien Le Prestre de Vauban.
The rest of the tour leads through Beaumarais to the municipality of Wallerfangen. Past the tranquil "Adolphshöhe" with the Wallerfangen Historical Museum, the route leads to the "Fabrikplatz" (location of the town hall), Wallerfangen's central market square. This is where the Villeroy earthenware factory once stood, whose history, products and connection with the global company Villeroy & Boch can be learned about in the Wallerfangen Historical Museum.
After a few minutes' rest, we are finally back on the Saar, where we enjoy a leisurely ride along the Saar Cycle Path towards Saarlouis, taking in the scenery. This section of the tour connects to the "Saarlouis loop".
On an idyllic section along the oxbow lake of the Saar with its charming city garden, a place of peace and relaxation, we finally reach the city center of Saarlouis and the large market. Experiencing the typical savoir vivre of the city, our "Tour de Saarlouis" can end comfortably in one of the countless pubs in the old town.
