RemstalWeg Etappe 05: von Straßdorf nach Heubach

Hiking enjoyment on the fifth stage of the RemstalWeges from Straßdorf to Heubach. A varied stage awaits you with a crisp hill through fields, meadows, forest and villages.

You start today's stage at the Kapellenhof and immediately turn east, where you walk around Schwäbisch Gmünd in the south through fields and meadows again on the "Wege zur Kunst" sculpture trail and through an allotment garden settlement. You also cross the embankment of the former narrow-gauge railroad to Göppingen; watch out cyclists! Then you cross the Waldstetter Bach directly at the confluence with the Bettringer Bach and turn south again. The route continues through fields and meadows until you reach the first large section of forest on this stage, which you walk through on a hill (war plain with former US army bunkers, now a refuge for bats). You have to climb almost 150 meters to reach the "war plain".After you have left the woodland, the trail descends again. You pass the Steinbach farms and turn towards Weiler in den Bergen, a district of Schwäbisch Gmünd in the Strümpfelbach valley, which was first mentioned in a document in 1345. In the center of the village, at the geographically highest point of the village, is the Catholic church of St. Michael, which is visible from afar and invites you to visit and take a short break.

You leave Weiler in an easterly direction and continue walking across fields and meadows for approx. 1.5 km on an asphalt cycle path uphill again. You will see the "Bargauer Horn" nature reserve in front of you. At this point, turn left. After a further ascent, you will pass the Beurener Kreuz and then the Himmelreich Nature Friends' House. Between Himmelreich and the ascent to Scheuelberg, you have to cross a meadow in a saddle, but before that you have a view of Rechberg and Stuifen as well as Schwäbisch Gmünd. A narrow path leads up to the long, wooded plain of the Scheuelberg. On the ridge on the western side, you pass a viewpoint with a view of the Ellwangen mountains. From the eastern rock, you have a wonderful view of the town of Heubach, today's stage destination, which is only a short "serpentine descent" away, as well as the Rosenstein with its ruins opposite.
