Grubenweg Höchen

A tour close to the village through a beautiful wooded area with a large proportion of beech trees and historic mining relics. The Höchen mining trail connects the two historic Höchen mining sites, which have the only thing in common being that they are located on Höchen territory. The Höcherberghaus inn and the Höcher tower round off the hiking experience.

The Grubenweg Höchen is a wooded and varied circular hiking trail with the Höcherberghaus as a refreshment stop. The 26-metre-high Höcherberg tower is of course a must-see on this tour, offering a magnificent view far beyond the borders of Saarland: On a clear day, you can see as far as the Black Forest (Hornisgrinde) and the Vosges (Donon). At 518 meters, the Höcherberg is the highest elevation in the Saarpfalz district and boasts a magnificent wooded area. For generations, life on the Höcherberg was dominated by coal. Today, the relics of mining are not immediately obvious to everyone. The Höchen Mining Trail leads along the stone witnesses of mining and provides a multifaceted insight into the history of industry and work. The old "Maschinenhaus" and the former "Fortunaschacht" can be found along the way. Although the so-called "Stollenmundloch" is not exactly on the route, it can be visited via a short detour. In addition to the structural mining relics, the hike leads past the edge of the village and the sports field to the former "Shaft III" of the Frankenholz mine with the associated spoil tip, which is the highest coal spoil tip in Germany.

If you want to go up the tower, you can do so on Sundays and public holidays from morning to evening, when the tower is always open. During the week, the key can be collected from the inn's kiosk to access the tower.
