A circular hike around Bubsheim and Egesheim, with the highlights "Granegg ruins" and "Heidentor".
The tour offers great views of the Bäratal valley and Egesheim. The local church and the Loretto Chapel in Egesheim are also well worth a visit.
Information about the tour
You can explore the fascinating past of the Heuberg on this tour near Bubsheim. It takes its name from the ruin that rises on a rocky outcrop high above the Untere Bära valley right at the start of the route. The lords of Michelstein probably built a castle at this strategically favorable location in the 11th century, which passed into the possession of the Ifflinger von Granegg knights in the late Middle Ages. Today, an impressive part of the keep is still preserved. This was secured and rewalled by the Swabian Alb Association after the ruins were handed over to them in 1931 at the end of an eventful history. However, caution is advised when entering the complex, as the walls are bordered by a steep slope.Lower down in the valley in Egesheim, the parish church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, painted around 1760 in the Baroque style, and the shimmering red Loretto Chapel are well worth a visit.
On the other hand, it becomes almost mystical when the path leads out of the valley again. Now you need to be in good shape, as the steady ascent with the detour to the "Heidentor" can be strenuous. The impressive natural rock formation in the Oberburg district between Egesheim and Reichenbach is located in the middle of a mysterious forest that exudes a special attractionexudes a special attraction. This is no coincidence: it is a former Celtic place of worship and sacrifice that is the subject of many fantasies and stories
Systematic archaeological investigations and excavations in the 1990s unearthed numerous metal parts and pottery shards as well as beads and decorative brooches, mainly from the period around 600 to 400 BC. Scholars consider the cult site to be of regional significance for this period. However, it is not known to which deity offerings were made here
Tip: detour to the Beilstein Cave
After the Granegg ruins, follow the "Drei-Dörfer-Rundweg" (Bu 3) for a short distance (approx. 900 m) in the direction of "Götzenaltar / Königsheim. A signposted turn-off leads off to the left to the Beilsteinhöhle (some surefootedness required). Then take the same route back to the Granegg ruins.
