The varied circular tour starts at Doktorplatz. The name of this square was coined by the common people in the 19th century, as the citizens (and their animals) would sometimes occupy the square while waiting to visit the local veterinarian. Originally, however, this square was called "The square where the lime tree stands".
Now, direct your gaze to the "Nudelhaus," as behind the present-day restaurant hides the first apothecary house built in Rheda in 1604. The Neuhaus inn, erected in 1716, is very atypical for Calvinist-influenced Rheda with its striking facade decorations – perhaps a Catholic once lived here? Take some time to study the colorful coats of arms.
Next, stroll through the alleys of the historic old town. In the "Großer Wall" and the "Kleine Straße," you will walk past beautiful half-timbered houses lining both sides of the street. Information panels on the elegant buildings provide interesting facts about the houses.
Do not miss the chance to glance down at the ground. The pavement displays symbols of old craft guilds, revealing who once lived and worked here.
From the small old town alleys, you now arrive at the newly constructed pedestrian zone. At Rathausplatz lies the evangelical town church, one of the oldest churches in the region. Various church treasures, including a baptismal font from 1567 and the still-used Prince's gallery from the early 18th century, give the church a distinctive appearance. Feel free to take a look inside!
The tour continues through Hoppenstraße with its remarkable half-timbered buildings towards Domhof. The half-timbered house built in 1616 is now used as a meeting place. One room is even set up for civil wedding ceremonies.
Along Schlossstraße, you now reach Wilhelmstraße with the Catholic parish church St. Clemens. It is renowned for the famous Fischer & Krämer organ. Organ concerts featuring world-famous musicians are a major draw for visitors.
From St. Clemens Church, a few steps lead you to Flora-Westfalica-Park. The rose garden was specifically created for the 1988 State Garden Show. Through the park, you reach the castle garden. Before you, the imposing water castle rises into the sky. First mentioned in writing in 1170, it combines several architectural styles: a chapel tower from the 13th century, a Renaissance wing with a gallery, and a Baroque wing. Yet it is the small anecdotes that captivate visitors: the graffiti of a prisoner in the small castle chapel or the horse skeleton in the carriage museum.
Finally, the path leads you back to the starting point, Doktorplatz, via Steinweg.
