The history of the municipality of Kerken dates back to the Middle Ages. More than 1000 years ago, the churches were not only the center of the farming communities, but also formed a central point for the social life of the people here. This fact is still true to this day, as even in the 21st century, the citizens feel connected to "their" church towers, such as the idyllic onion dome of St. Dionysius in Nieukerk, the slim lordly tower of St. Peter and Paul in Aldekerk, or the neo-Romanesque church tower of St. Thomas in Stenden.
