Duke Wilhelm, to whom the construction of the citadel with the residential palace that still exists today is attributed, would still feel at home in Jülich today. Because the layout of its city center has remained unchanged to this day and represents an ideal city layout of the Renaissance from the 16th century. This has not been changed by the French and Prussians either, who also left their architectural traces. As a research city, Jülich has made a name for itself far beyond its borders in modern times, and the research center is one of the leading institutions in Germany. In its institutes and competence centers, scientists investigate complex topics such as fuel cell development, biotechnology, structural change, quantum technology, and Covid-19 research.
Directions
From the castle square in front of the citadel, the path leads past the provost parish church, through the marketplace, past the Witch Tower and promenade to the Rur River. Here, there is the opportunity to explore the bridgehead and park area via the pedestrian bridge. The path back to the city center passes by the evangelical Christ Church and through the citadel moat.
The starting point for all Jülich circular hiking trails is the castle square, corner of Kölnstraße and Schlossstraße. The "Historical Circular Route" through the city center is marked with yellow (JÜL). These signs are clearly visible at regular intervals on posts or directly on trees, especially before turns, in both directions. This allows you to hike the circular routes in both directions or start at any marking and return to the starting point after some time.
