Disappeared yet present.
Over five hundred years old, shut down for half a century. The Gouley mine in Würselen was at times the most successful in the Wurm region, employing over 3,200 people.
Until 1969, a mighty railway viaduct bridged the Wurm at Teuterhof, providing a connection between the mine and the regional railway network. Today, we walk a stretch on the former railway embankment, passing another bridge peeking out of the undergrowth along the way.
On the wayside, the von-Goerschen adit trickles. Initially intended for coal extraction, it later ensured the drainage of the Gouley mine and continues to do so. Since the local coal seams reach up to the earth's surface, coal could be superficially mined on the slopes of the Wurm valley since the Middle Ages. On the tour, we come across a steeply inclined coal seam with coal that can be touched.
