Juniper route

This hiking trail owes its name to the efforts to resettle the almost extinct juniper tree, which is native to the Reichswald, back into the area. About 100 cuttings were taken from the last "dying" juniper tree and successfully planted in this dry area.
You come across two heath areas here that you would not expect at all. These are carefully maintained by the forestry service. Pine, larch, and beech forests as well as slopes with many tall trees can also be found here. On the route, you also hike over the Rupenberg, the highest point in the Reichswald (96 m).
The Reichswald is located on an end-moraine ridge that formed during the last ice age. This moraine ridge stretches from Nijmegen (NL) to Kleve and further over Xanten towards the Ruhr area.
