This tour gives you a good insight into the history of Bautzen and Upper Lusatia. From Schützenplatz, along Am Stadtwall, where a good section of the outer town wall can still be seen, the route heads north-east to Schafberg, where the tour can be extended with a visit to the Napoleon monument and prehistoric burial site (Hügelgrab monument), continuing to Niederkaina and Kreckwitz, you come to two memorials to 1813, when units of Napoleon's Marshal Ney attacked Blücher's Prussians here, forgetting that they were supposed to complete the encirclement of the allies.
Passing the airfield, which has existed since the 1930s, the route leads to Baschütz, Zieschütz and Jenkwitz, where a detour to the Monarch's Hill with its monument is worthwhile. This is where Prussia's king and Russia's tsar watched Napoleon's troops and perhaps even "him" himself on the Schafberg opposite. After Rabitz on the "Findlingsweg" to the idyllically situated nature park with a restaurant and the nearby observatory, the route continues past Germany's only completely preserved hussar barracks back to the city.
