Keltenweg an der Altenburg

The Altenburg on the 433 m high mountain is a large fortification from the Iron Age, which impressively demonstrates around 5,000 years of cultural and historical development and is one of the best-preserved ramparts in northern Hesse. The name itself indicates that this is a very "old fortification". You can still see ditches, ramparts and settlement sites that existed in Celtic times. In the time of Asterix and Obelix, people built a secure fortification on the ridge of the Altenburg and lived here. In the Middle Ages, there was another settlement on the mountainside and in more recent times, people built gazebos for their enjoyment to take advantage of the beautiful view. When the viewing tower on the summit was rebuilt in 1963, a particularly large number of pottery finds were made. Shards from the period between 750 and 150 BC show that the site was used by people over long periods of time. The circular trail and the wooden observation tower offer wonderful views of the Schwalm Valley and the surrounding area. At 13 stations along the circular trail, information boards explain visible and no longer visible features of the site from the Iron Age to the Middle Ages and modern times.
