Description

The Geopfad Bad Kösen (formerly known as "Himmelreichweg") leads past Rudelsburg, Burg Saaleck, Gasthaus Himmelreich, and over the heights to the right and left of the Saale river.

The trail is 10 km long, with elevation changes of approximately 100 meters twice, so you should plan for at least 3.5 hours, not including breaks and stops.

Several information boards along the trail provide insight into the geology of the Saale valley in this area.

The trail is well signposted and marked, so a hiking map is not necessarily required. Additionally, you can start the hike from either direction.

There are opportunities for refreshments at Rudelsburg and Gaststätte Himmelreich.

Franz Kugler wrote the famous folk song "An der Saale hellem Strande" at Rudelsburg in 1826. Furthermore, four monuments were erected by corps student associations, which are worth visiting.

The over 800-year-old Burg Saaleck is not in use. However, it is worth visiting as it offers a beautiful view of the Saaletal valley with many picnic spots available. In 1922, the castle was the last hiding place of the attackers of Walter Rathenau.

A popular variant of the hiking trail is the marked descent, the Kuno Klamm, from Burg Saaleck to the Saaleck boat landing. From there, you can take a passenger ship back to Bad Kösen.
