This stage begins with a steep climb through the hillside forest up to Schlitten. Then it is flat through meadows to St. Leonhard im Forst, whose pilgrimage church was decorated by the Wessobrunn artists Matthäus Günther and Tassilo Zöpf.
Through the hamlets of Linden and Hof, you reach a moorland forest, finally with a view of the little church on the mountain in the Hohenpeißenberg district of Hetten. Now the ascent to Hoher Peißenberg begins, which is also known as the "Bavarian Rigi" due to its magnificent panoramic views.
In the 16th century, there were pilgrimages to a carved image of the Madonna on the Hohen Peißenberg, which is now housed in a side chapel of the church. The outstanding works of renowned Wessobrunn artists are also impressive in this church.
Behind the church is a weather station of global importance, which was originally set up by Rottenbuch monks in 1781 as an observatory and is considered to be the first and oldest observatory in the world. An educational weather trail explains the aspects of weather and climate. Since 1950, there have also been broadcasting facilities on the Peißenberg; the television tower, visible from afar and 163 m high, was erected in 1978.
A path begins behind the church, leading partly down steps through the forest to another magnificent panoramic mountain view and into the village of Hohenpeißenberg. An asphalt path then winds longer through the meadows to a level crossing, where you can also continue to Peiting for a possible overnight stay.
