Distributed in an almost strategic way within the urban core, the city has a series of modernist buildings that are largely those that give it character.
Modernism arrives at the beginning of the twentieth century and translates into a few works of particular use: the villa of Els Juncosa -today Oliveras-, Can Vidal, Ca l'Estela, and a series of works of a social type: the School Group, the Juncosa asylum and the café La Concòrdia.
All these works, with the exception of the Juncosa villa and the asylum, are projects of the architect Josep Azemar i Pont (municipal architect of Figueres from 1889).
The project of the Estela house, located in a chamfer of the Plaza Mayor, was approved in 1908 and served as a model for other works that Azemar did later in Figueres and Olot. The complex, crowned with a tower, is an obligatory landmark in the center of town.
