To access the Jardines de Cuenca , walk across the Puente Viejo . The Puente Viejo is the successor of the Puente Romano / Arabe which served as a connecting bridge until the 16th century. The bridge was originally Roman, but the Moors (Muslims) built a new bridge on the old Roman foundations, so the bridge is called both Roman and Arabic. This Puente Viejo served as a connecting bridge until the construction of the Puente Nuevo in the 18th century. The Puente Viejo has a beautiful gateway, the Arco de Felipe V.
The bridge crosses El Tajo . This is the gorge that separates the Mercadillo and La Ciudad districts of Ronda. The gorge that ends in La Caldera has a length of 500 meters, a width of 50 meters and is about 100 meters deep . The gorge has been carved by the river that runs through it, the Guadalevín.
