The Matrera Gate is located just meters from the House-Palace Garcia de Veas .
Between the lower town of Barrio Bajo and the old town , the Matrera Gate is the only ancient entrance to the walled part of the town that has survived. It was instrumental in the defense of the city against the East. This gate was decisive in the siege attempts of the walled city because it had a favorable strategic position for the defenders. The gate was protected by two towers , but only the tower on the right, seen from the ascent's point of view, has survived to this day. It is called the Tower of Treason .
The Matrera gate was rebuilt in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and remains of the wall between the houses can be seen. It is an arch surrounded by houses, containing a simple vaulted chapel containing a sculpture of the Virgin of Pilar.
