Description

The Jerez Zoo was formerly called Alberto Durán's Zoo and Botanical Garden . It covers 65,000 square meters and has planned an extension and renovation program that would lead to a doubling of the surface area.

The visit is on foot and takes 2 to 3 hours. There is also a train.

Its origins date back to 1889, when the city's water tanks were built at the Tempul spring and the surrounding area was landscaped. The water was brought to the people via the Tempul aqueduct. The Tempul Gardens, as they were called, became public gardens in 1939 . The Jerez Botanical Garden was beginning to take shape. It is one of the oldest in Spain, with a prized collection of unique and ancient trees.

In 1953 it was renamed Alberto Durán Zoological Park and Botanical Garden , the new aim of which was to evolve into a botanical garden where animals and plants go together.

The more than 1,000 trees consist of 150 species.

The zoo was initially dedicated to the Iberian Peninsula but over the years the zoological collection has expanded to nearly 1,000 animals belonging to nearly 200 different species from the five continents. Many of these animals have been bred in captivity in the zoo, such as white tigers. Here you can see lions, giraffes, chimpanzees, hippos, caimans, reptiles, etc.

In collaboration with a specialized company, there is a permanent exhibition of reptiles and amphibians.
