The construction of the church began in 1525 at the behest of the Margravine of Priego.
It is a 16th -century Gothic Mudéjar building with three naves and pointed arches on octagonal columns, topped with a Mudéjar roof whose decoration is still preserved under the 18th-century Baroque vault.
In front of it is the Porta de Santa Ana , with the main gate with latticework from 1575 and the tower from 1541. The numerous side chapels were built in the 17th century, such as that of Cristo de los Parrillas, which was completed in 1636.
The statue of Christ is attributed to Alonso de Mena and dates from around 1635. The main altar is late Renaissance.
One of the masterpieces of Spanish Baroque, the Tabernacle was built by Francisco Javier Pedrajas between 1772 and 1784 and has been a National Monument since 1932.
Inside the temple is a museum containing numerous silver works, the oldest of which date from the 16th century, the most outstanding being the choirs and Renaissance guardian of 1589, and the gold and enamel altarpiece donated by the archbishop. and the viceroy Caballero y Góngora in 1794.
