This square, built in 1962 , was built to increase the traffic density of Gran Via and the San Matías neighborhood.
At the end of the square they later built the huge mirrored building of the Banco de Santander. This block clearly breaks with the historicist aesthetic that prevails in the buildings of Gran Via. To soften the architectural impact of this financial building , the bronze statue of Isabella the Catholic and Christopher Columbus was removed from Passeig del Saló.
The church in the background belongs to the Convent of Carmelitas Descalzas or Convent of San José, founded in 1582 and located in the Plaza de Sant Joan de la Creu.
