The statue of Fra Domingo de Silos Moreno has suffered many fates since it was placed in the Duomo Square: relocation, attempted demolition, transfer to municipal buildings and solemn restoration. But the strangest thing happened after it was unveiled at the Carraca Armory in 1856.
Silos Moreno, a Benedictine friar , was made bishop of Cádiz in 1824. The following year he solemnly entered the diocese. With a very humble and simple character, he devoted himself entirely to the completion of the Duomo, which he was able to consecrate in 1832. Proof of his humility is the inscription he had placed on his tomb : "Monk unworthy Benedictine and most unworthy Bishop of Cadiz".
