The Cordoba Provincial Historical Archives is the archive where public documents from the province of Cordoba are kept, with documents dating back to the 13th century.
It is located in the old church of Santo Domingo. It had been in private hands since its confiscation in the mid-19th century. The Provincial Historical Archives consists of two buildings. On one side , the Church of Santo Domingo de Silos, where the Documents Archive is located, and on the other , an 18th century house with access from Calle Pompeos, where the administrative and research offices are located. Connecting the two buildings is the chapel of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción , an old side chapel of the church that leads from one building to the other.
The Church of Santo Domingo de Silos is one of fourteen founded by Ferdinand III when he reconquered the city. It was a parish church until 1782, when it merged with the nearby parish of El Salvador to found the Parroquia del Salvador y Santo Domingo de Silos, which was housed in the church of the Colegio de Santa Catalina de la Compañía de Jesús.
Today the church retains its original structure, three naves separated by pointed arches that had to be renovated due to their dilapidated state. Part of the old Mudejar ceiling has been preserved in the nave. The tower , which has been renovated several times but whose current form seems to date from 1762, has also been preserved. Although it is an original element of the church, today it is private property and is not part of the archive.
