The Monument to Julio Romero de Torres is located in the southern part of the Agricultural Gardens.
Since the death of the Cordovan painter , the city of Cordoba wanted to offer him a statue in an emblematic place in the city. After the opening of the Museum Julio Romero de Torres, plans were made for its construction, which was finally carried out by the Almerian sculptor Juan Cristóbal Quesada , and it was inaugurated on May 22, 1940.
The painter is depicted in the center of the monument, with his dog Pacheco at his feet , a black greyhound he had received from some friends. The whole consists mainly of stone and bronze for the statue.
Julio Romero de Torres (Córdoba, November 9, 1874) was a Spanish Symbolist painter . Around 1908, his aesthetic led to a personal style that combined folksy and genuine folklore , in a very Andalusian line full of sophistication and charm.
Romero de Torres stands out for his precise drawing in balanced compositions of bluish, greenish and especially black colours. It was also known for its flamenco and bullfighting themes , with a certain homage to the popular copla.
