It is the site of a skirmish between the British I Corps under Douglas Haig and the German Fifth Army on 25 August 1914.
Landrecies was fotified by a Vauban. The reason is that due to the geological construction, Landrecies is a gate to the north, that is the Ardennes. As such, it makes it an obvious place to pass an army.
