This place is a famous stopping-point for pilgrims on the road to Santiago de Compostela.

The Basilica of St. Martin is built on top of the tomb of Saint Martin of Tours, who died on November 8, 397.

Saint Martinus is celebrtaed on November 11. This is also the date that coincided with collecting the harvest and the day geese were slaughtered. On this day, traditionally, the Saint-Martin fires were lit. A tradition going back to the habits of the Germanic tribes in honour of the god Wodan.

On St. Martin’s Day, children in Flanders, the southern and north-western parts of the Netherlands, the Catholic areas of Germany and Austria participate in paper lantern processions.
