With a thickness of 130 metres, Mazan's gypsum layer is the most important in Europe. It is also the largest open pit mine in Europe. The quarry is 350 meters deep and has 25 km of roads. It has been in use for more than 100 years and is now operated by Lafarge.
We drive about a kilometer further around the gypsum quarry. Before a forest, at the first major intersection we turn right in the direction of Blauvac. The road winds up between the trees, pointing sticks and fruit trees. Past a few farmhouses on the left, the road turns to the left. Just at this moment we see a kind of small parallel road on the left that also makes a right-angled turn to the left. We turn in it and now drive parallel to the main road to the top.
