In 1890, the most "illustrious Frenchman" was born in Lille, at 9 rue Princesse, with his maternal grandparents, Jules and Julia Maillot. After Jules Maillot's death in 1891, Julia was left alone. A pious atmosphere lingers in this birthplace, as austere as the widow Maillot. Suddenly, life comes back to the house with the visit of the De Gaulle family and their five children during the Easter holidays, Sinterklaas, and the fair of Lille. When the widow Maillot died in 1912, the house passed to Gustave de Corbie, godfather of the General. The birth house underwent some renovations to make it more comfortable and user-friendly.
