The First World War, 1914 – 1918, was the 'Great War', the 'war that ends all wars'. In that conflict, the 'Western Front' was the main battlefield in France and Belgium where major battles were fought. Of the more than 290,000 Australians who fought in the AIF (the Australian Imperial Armed Forces) on this battlefield, 46,000 soldiers were killed or died of their injuries in battle.
