It is worth taking time to walk around this quiet and peaceful cemetery.
This 'Ehrenfriedhof' (plot of honour) on the western flank of the hill known as 'la Montagne' contains the graves of 2,498 German soldiers. Most of them were originally buried near the field hospital in the park of Dalle Chateau, in the so-called Waldfriedhof (Wood Cemetery).
Thirteen of the dead are Jewish and have an upright headstone instead of a cross. Sometimes you will find little pebbles on these headstones. This is a Jewish custom that dates back to the time when the Jews were still a desert people. The only way to make and mark a grave in the desert was by piling up stones.
This cemetery was started in 1921, primarily to make possible the clearance of the burial ground in the chateau park.
