This monument, erected by the Germans during the First World War, originally overlooked a temporary cemetery where the soldiers who fell on the Chemin des Dames not far from the Sainte-Berthe chapel, located no more than 800 m away. It was recently rediscovered under rubble. One can still read the dedication (in German) engraved there: "Friends and enemies of death together, they rest in the protective bosom of the earth, until the master awakens the spirits with his creative word: may he become ... [the end is unreadable nowadays]".
