Born into a family of bakers, Georges de La Tour, one of the greatest French painters of the 17th century, was born in Vic-sur-Seille in Moselle. The Departmental Museum is located in the very centre of the town. With a very coherent collection of paintings - it covers French painting from the 17th to the beginning of the 20th century - the Georges de la Tour Departmental Museum offers 960 m² of exhibition space, spread over 3 floors of about 130 m² each. 17th century painting on the 1st floor, landscape and 18th century painting on the 2nd floor and under the glass roof, romanticism and the period from the 19th to the beginning of the 20th century. The Vicar collections are developed underground, a reference to the foundations of Georges de la Tour's native land. The high point of these collections is the "Saint-Jean-Baptiste in the desert" recognized as a major work, which shows Saint John the Baptist, a lean teenager leaning on a wooden cross. The half-body framing in a wide format allows comparison with Caravaggio's painting of the same theme.
