Before the construction of the present church, other buildings of varying importance have marked the history of the church in Diebling. In the 11th or 12th century a place of worship would have already existed in Diebling, a simple oratory or chapel dedicated to St Wendelin, patron saint of the parish.
It was not until 1423 with the creation of the Confraternity of St Wendelin that a chapel existed and even became a place of pilgrimage.
