Built in 1783 to the north of the city, in the extension of the Cours Léopold, its name recalls the name of a lieutenant who died while defending soldiers garrisoned in the middle of the rebellion. Its sculpted decoration evokes various wars, including the Battle of Nancy in 1477.
Today it is the oldest war memorial in France and illustrates the courage that the people of Nancy showed, from the Poilus of the First World War to the soldiers who died in contemporary conflicts.
