The Faubourg Pavé necropolis lies to the east of Verdun, in the direction of Etain, Metz and Champ de Bataille. The necropolis contains 5,516 bodies, including 4,852 from the First World War. 14 Russian graves, 1 Romanian, 1 Luxembourg, 1 Indochinese, 1 Chinese. A large cross stands in the middle of the cemetery, around which lie the remains of 7 unknown soldiers (Carré des 7 Inconnus). These 7 + 1 were presented on November 10, 1920 at the ceremony for the Choice of the Unknown Soldier. Private Thin designated a coffin that was sent to Paris, representing the sacrifice of a generation for his country. The other 7 remained in Verdun. At the Avenue Joffre entrance, 6 Skoda cannons are on display, taken from the Germans on the Eastern Front. A monument sculpted by Léon Cuvelle in homage to those shot and deported during the Second World War is also visible from this entrance, as is a monument to the Aviators.
