Eglise Saint-Pierre

Imagine in the 11th century a vast priory, with dwelling, cloister and church, under the authority of the Abbey of St Sever. All that remains today is a door (cemetery) and the church. The ribbed vaults of the nave and the lower side are decorated with 35 different keystones. Their interpretation is sometimes difficult, like this duck with two heads. In Nerbis in 1569, in the middle of the religious wars, the Protestants, chased by the Catholics, set fire to the church and the priory, melted down the bells, stole the treasure... The cagots, marginalized population, suspected of carrying leprosy lived proscribed and rejected by the populations. ¨Small isolated village with a scattered settlement, Nerbis became a refuge for some. Their condition of pariahs earned them in the church a door and a stoup apart, they can still be seen today on the north wall of the Nave.
