Église Saint-Nicolas - Troyes

Description

The church dates from the 16th century and contains important examples of stained glass and Renaissance sculpture.

This chapel was part of the parish of St-Jean-au-Marché in 1189 and only became independent in 1722. The church was rebuilt in stone after the fire of 1524, which destroyed a large part of the town.

The bell tower across the avenue on the north side was destroyed in the 18th century. When the fortifications were demolished, the western portal was built in 1840. The central bay behind the high altar dates only from 1900.

This Calvary chapel in the form of a tribune, reached by a monumental staircase, was built on the orders of vicar Jacques Collet. It is richly decorated with a monumental painting by Nicolas Cordonnier on the north wall, made between 1551 and 1552. The painting is framed by two sculpted groups: the donor, on the right, and the donor accompanied by saints, in the style of the Chaource studio.

The Christ bending under the cross is a protected 16th century work attributed to the Chaource workshop. Leaning against the stained glass window, donated by the Collet family, we can also admire a Christ on a column, a 16th century5 work in white marble attributed to François Gentil. The pedestal contains expressions of gratitude. This statue used to stand in the middle of the chapel as a column supporting the ceiling; it was moved in the mid-19th century to welcome people coming up the stairs.

The church has a fine collection of stained glass windows from the 16th and early 17th centuries, including a series of grisaille windows with gold accents in the nave from the mid-16th century. Some of the church's notable stained glass windows include:

A grisaille with the Miracle of the Host from 1563

A grisaille with the Beatitudes by master glass artist Jean Soudain,

A Miracle of the Billets donated by the Marisy, Mauroy and Le Tartier families,

A life of Daniel from 1535.
