Belfry Saint-Eloy - Dunkirk

Source: Willem Vandenameele

Description

The Belfry was built around 1440 and was the bell tower of the St. Eloois Church until a fire separated the two buildings in 1558. It is 58 meters high.

It thus became a municipal bell tower with a carillon of 48 bells that are always in use, including the "Jean Bart", a bourdon (deepest sounding bell) that weighs no less than 7 tons.

The belfry is part of the World Heritage listing Belfries in Belgium and France.

You begin your journey through time with an elevator up to the impressive carillon with 50 bells. You continue your visit by climbing 65 steps to enjoy a breathtaking view.

The belfry can be visited all year round.
