The Couard Cross was erected in 1947 to celebrate the return of prisoners and deportees from the Second World War. It stands on the Montagne de Couard (737 m), overlooking the village of Fresse-sur-Moselle and offering a fine view of the town center. At the time, the materials used to build it were hauled up the hill on the backs of men by the villagers, including schoolchildren who climbed the sand up steep paths. Accessible only on foot, the site can be reached either from the village center or from the Etang du Frac, following the red ring path.
